Overview

SureScan was engaged to perform an extensive ground-penetrating radar (GPR) survey at an airport as part of preparations for future infrastructure development to accommodate larger aircrafts. The primary objective of the project was to assess the thickness of the existing concrete slabs, ensuring they could support the increased load demands associated with larger aircraft.

Our Approach

The project began with successful runway and concrete slab scans, allowing for incident-free core drilling with no underground services detected. Subsequent GPR scans across 400 slabs informed on structural consistency, while joint examinations suggested reinforcement concerns for interior slabs due to the absence of dowel bars.

Findings

The results indicated that most of the interior slabs maintained a somewhat consistent depth ranging between 160mm and 200mm, while the slab edges consistently measured approximately 240mm thick. These finding suggest a need for further analysis of the load-bearing capacity of the central, unreinforced slabs.

We provide concrete scanning and structural reporting in all major cities including Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Canberra, Darwin and Hobart as well as regional areas.
